Trainers, Don’t Get Caught Doing These 9 Things

Mistakes Happen—But Some Shouldn’t

No one wants to make mistakes, but they’re a part of life. As trainers, we often assume, "That won’t happen to me." However, this optimism bias can sometimes lead to overlooking important details that affect client experience.

While some mistakes may seem like common sense, even the best trainers fall into these “trainer sins” from time to time. Recognizing and avoiding them can make the difference between a loyal client and one who never books another session.

Here are nine mistakes you should never make:

1️⃣ Arriving Late
Punctuality is non-negotiable. Being late, even occasionally, can break trust and frustrate clients.

💡 Quick fix: If you’re running behind due to unforeseen circumstances, communicate immediately via the Helf Messenger to manage expectations.
2️⃣ Being Distant or Unengaged
Your client doesn’t have to be excited to be there—but you do.

💡 Quick fix: No matter what’s happening in your personal life, use training sessions as a time to be present, energetic, and engaged. Your attitude sets the tone.
3️⃣ Pushing Too Hard (or Not Enough)
Every client has different needs. One-size-fits-all intensity shows a lack of personalization.

💡 Quick fix: Adapt to each client’s fitness level, goals, and limits. Balance challenge with encouragement.
4️⃣ Miscounting Reps or Time
Losing track of reps or time makes you seem distracted and uninvested.

💡 Quick fix: Stay engaged by talking through sets, counting out loud, and using a stopwatch if needed.
5️⃣ Getting Distracted or Forgetting the Workout Plan
Zoning out during a session? It happens—but it shouldn’t.

💡 Quick fix: If focus is an issue, take a deep breath, refocus, and use a structured plan or notes to stay on track.
6️⃣ Neglecting to Correct Form
Clients rely on you for guidance and safety. Failing to correct bad form can lead to injury and loss of trust.

💡 Quick fix: Be proactive with cues—you don’t always need to physically adjust someone. A simple, “Keep your core engaged” or “Slow down on the eccentric phase” makes a big difference.
7️⃣ Checking Your Phone or Getting Distracted
Looking at your phone—even for a second—sends the message that something else is more important.

💡 Quick fix: If you use your phone for workout tracking, switch to a stopwatch and notepad to avoid distractions.
8️⃣ Staying Silent Throughout the Set
A client doesn’t hire a personal trainer for silence. A lack of feedback can make you seem indifferent.

💡 Quick fix: Always provide verbal guidance, encouragement, or corrections—whether it’s about form, reps, or motivation.
9️⃣ Avoiding Eye Contact
Eye contact builds trust and confidence. Without it, you may come off as disengaged or unapproachable.

💡 Quick fix: Keep natural, professional eye contact—but don’t stare. Maintain a balanced connection while checking form.
Take Control of Your Sessions

We all make mistakes, but repeating them is not acceptable.

Want to improve? Write down the mistakes that resonate most with you and keep them somewhere visible. Small adjustments can lead to stronger client relationships, better sessions, and more success.

💡 Stay present. Stay engaged. Keep improving.
